Search and rescue launched near Wanaka

2 November 2008: 00:10am

Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) has launched a Search and Rescue operation to find a Robinson R22 helicopter and sole occupant overdue on a flight to Wanaka. The helicopter was last sighted north of Wanaka.

The family of the missing pilot notified RCCNZ he was overdue just after eight o’clock on Saturday night.

RCCNZ Search Mission Coordinator Christine Wilson says local police and advisors are working with RCCNZ. Helicopters from Te Anau and Queenstown using night vision goggles are engaged in the search along with a local boat.

“Two fires seen on one of the islands and on the lake shore have been discounted, as has an emergency beacon signal which is unrelated,” Mrs Wilson said.
