The recognition framework

To survey ships under the Maritime Operators Safety System (MOSS), a surveyor must hold a Certificate of Surveyor Recognition.

The recognition framework outlines:

  1. the surveyor recognition categories defined by Maritime New Zealand
  2. the qualifications and experience required for surveyors seeking recognition to perform surveys of a particular category.

Before you apply for recognition, we recommend that you gain an understanding of the recognition framework and MOSS survey requirements first (see Before applying below).

 

Apply to become a surveyor

Apply for recognition by using this step by step application process.

1. Before applying

Read the relevant guidelines about MOSS surveyor categories and how competency will be assessed.

2. Application forms and documentation

Complete the three forms, gather your supporting documents and identification photographs and send them to MNZ.

3. Pay the application fee

Indicate your preferred payment method on the Application for recognition as a surveyor form. See Recognition fees below.

4. Confirmation your application is received

MNZ will send you an email or letter to confirm that we have received your application.

5. Application assessment

MNZ will assess your application.

You may be asked to provide further information, or to participate in an exam or practical assessment.

6. Issue of certificate

If you are successful, MNZ will issue the applicable certificate of recognition.


 

Recognition fees

  • These rates are effective from 1 July 2019.
  • All charges are in New Zealand currency and include goods and services tax (GST).
