From time to time Maritime New Zealand runs inspection campaigns to ensure compliance; because this helps keep people in the maritime industry safe from workplace harm.
These campaigns range from fact-finding missions to understand safety within particular sectors, to campaigns that target vessels that are at risk. These inspections come at no cost to the operator.
This campaign was conducted during the second half of 2017 and the first half of 2018, and involved inspecting the commercial operators who scored 40% or more in their risk rating, when they first entered the Maritime Operator Safety System (MOSS).
Over a 12 month period, Maritime NZ investigaged 24 incidents related to load failures from cranes on foreign-flagged ships. Stevedore loading logs were over-represented in ACC claims - especially in relation to musculoskeletal injuries.
Classified as one of New Zealand's high risk sector, the fishing sector was the focus of a targeted HSWA (Health and Safety at Work Act 2015) inspection campaign for the year 2016/2017.
