Changing a ship’s name or port of registry
You need to do these things:
- Complete the Application for Change of Name or Port of Registry (Form SR6)
- Pay the registration fee – NZ$245 for a change of ship’s name, NZ$245 for a change of port of registry or NZ$368 if the ship’s name and port of registry are being changed at the same time.
- Send your completed application form, telling us the option you used to pay the fee, to Maritime New Zealand by email, courier or post
- Send the ship’s certificate of registry to Maritime New Zealand by courier.
When we receive the application and fee, we will tell you if the new name and/or port of registry are approved. You can then mark the new name and/or port of registry on the ship.
If your ship is a pleasure vessel, we will send you a carving and marking note to sign to confirm the ship is marked with the new details.
For commercial ships, a recognised surveyor must view the marking on the ship and sign the carving and marking note.
When the change of ship’s name and/or port of registry have been registered we will send you a new certificate of registry by courier.
You can send your application via email, courier or post:
