Ship Design and Construction - Oil Tankers

  • New Zealand ships, warships and other ships of the New Zealand Defence Force.

Part 121A sets out design and construction requirements for oil tankers aimed at preventing pollution of the sea by oil. The requirements include segregated ballast tanks and their protective location, and in respect of tankers delivered since July 1996, double hulls.

From 2007, new tankers must have double-bottom spaces in cargo pump-rooms.

From 2010, new ships with oil fuel tank with an aggregate capacity of 600 cubic metres and above must enclose tanks in double hulls, locate tanks in protected areas and limit size of individual tanks.

This part gives effect to standards contained in Regulations 13, 16, 18, 19, 20, 29, 31, 32 & 34 of Annex I of MARPOL.
