Search and rescue awards highlight those who go above and beyond

As a coordinating agency, our Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) plays a key role in search and rescue in New Zealand.

When alerted to a person in distress, either on land or the water, it works with a range of agencies, including volunteer organisations to help bring people home.

RCCNZ General Manager Justin Allan says it was fantastic to see so many dedicated people get recognised for what they do. “Every day, volunteers and dedicated professionals are out there, often in trying circumstances to help those in need,” he says.

Recently retired Search and Rescue Officer at RCCNZ, Keith Allen was recognised at the awards for his dedication and commitment to search and rescue over more than 40 years with RCCNZ and New Zealand Police.Keith was presented a Rescue Gold Award (Support).

Keith began his involvement with search and rescue in the 1980s as a police officer in Lower Hutt and Wairarapa. During the period he developed a strong reputation as someone willing to go the extra mile when needed.

Justin Allan says it was great to have members of the team joining Keith and his wife at the event, including Director Kirstie Hewlett and members of the Maritime NZ leadership team.

“We would like congratulate Keith for his achievement and thank him for his sustained commitment to search and rescue,” he says.

Keith retired from RCCNZ in December 2025.
