Ministry of Justice Criminal Record checks

If you are applying for a maritime document that requires a fit and proper person (FPP) assessment, you will need to complete a Ministry of Justice Criminal Record check.

Maritime NZ uses Ministry of Justice (MoJ) criminal record checks for fit and proper person assessments. You request your own check and include it with your application. This makes processing your application faster as Maritime NZ does not need to request a separate Police vetting report.

Who needs a criminal record check

You need to provide a Ministry of Justice criminal record check if you are applying for a maritime document that requires a fit and proper person (FPP) assessment. This includes:

  • seafarer certificates

  • other maritime documents requiring FPP checks.

Check the requirements for your specific certificate to confirm whether you need to provide a criminal record check.

How to get your criminal record check

You need to request your own criminal record check directly from the Ministry of Justice and include the report with your application.

To request your check:

  1. Go to the Ministry of Justice website

  1. Click on "Criminal record check" at the top of the page

  1. Complete the request process

  1. Wait to receive your report

  1. Include the report with your application.

Requesting a copy of your own criminal record is free.

How long does it take

The Ministry of Justice responds to around 90% of requests within one week. However, the process can take up to 20 working days.

Allow enough time to receive your report before submitting your application.
