How Readiness and Response works

The National Maritime Response System

Major search and rescue operations, major maritime incidents, and national-level oil pollution responses are often complex and resource-intensive.

Maritime NZ’s National Maritime Response System brings together personnel, plans, procedures, and assets, all of which must be ready to respond in a coordinated way.

The National Maritime Response System delivers Maritime NZ’s lead agency responsibilities for the coordination of major search and rescue (SAR), and response to major maritime incidents and national-level marine oil pollution incidents.

Interacting with the National Risk and Resilience System

The National Risk and Resilience Framework, agreed by Cabinet, is a strategic and proactive framework used across government to strengthen New Zealand’s resilience to National Risks.

Funding

A number of mechanisms provide funding for readiness and response, across all of Maritime NZ’s three areas of responsibility – major search and rescue, major maritime incident response and oil pollution response.
