Before you apply
Before you start your application, make sure you:

meet all requirements for the certificate you want (sea service, training, ancillary certificates)

meet the required eyesight and medical standards

have passed any required examinations.

What you need to provide
Have the following ready before you start your application:

identity verification – one form of photo ID that has been sighted and signed by a trusted referee

medical fitness certificate – a current medical‑fitness certificate for seafarers
-
evidence of training – certificates or records of completed training courses
-
evidence of sea service – documented sea time in a relevant capacity
-
ancillary certificates – any additional certificates required for the certificate you are applying for
-
Ministry of Justice check – required for some higher‑risk roles (you will be told if this applies to your application).
How to apply
You apply for a certificate using the online seafarer application form.
Work through these steps:

Check the requirements: confirm that you meet all requirements for the certificate you want.

Gather your supporting documents: prepare clear copies of all required documents (do not send originals).

Complete the online application form: answer all questions and select the correct certificate and options for your situation.

Upload your supporting documents: upload copies of your identity, medical, sea‑service, training, and ancillary‑certificate evidence.

Submit your application: check everything is complete and submit the form.
Fees and payment
You must pay the application fee when you submit your application. Payment is made online as part of the application process.
After you submit and pay:

Maritime NZ will review your application

you may be asked for more information if anything is missing or unclear

you will be notified of the outcome once the assessment is complete.
