Ring fencing

The deadline for ring-fencing your old tickets has passed. You can no longer ring-fence them and they are not valid for use.

If you already hold a ring‑fenced NZOM, NZOW, or NZCM certificate and want to continue to exercise its privileges, you must meet currency requirements every five years.

This information sheet explains your options for meeting currency requirements:

Evidence of sea service

If you are providing evidence of sea service to support an application to meet currency requirements, and you are using a testimonial letter, include all the information below to help us process your application quickly:

  • letter or document must be correctly dated

  • employer’s name, address, and contact details

  • summary of service from the previous 5 years only, for example, “14 months 12 days”

  • duties or capacity you were signed on as, for example skipper

  • vessel details, for example, name, length, Maritime NZ number

  • area of operation, for example, restricted limits, coastal.

You can also document your sea service in other official ways, for example:

  • Maritime NZ sea service record book

  • statutory declaration, in some circumstances.

If your service is in a shore‑based role, this guidance explains what is required:
