Maritime NZ audits and inspections

Maritime NZ, as the New Zealand’s Flag State Administration is responsible for inspecting, assessing and auditing New Zealand-flagged ships and shipping companies against applicable sections of the Maritime Rules, Marine Protection Rules, SOLAS, the Maritime Labour Convention and the ISM Code.

Learn more about Maritime NZ inspections and audits of New-Zealand flagged ships, in particular:

  • ISM audits, which include reviewing a ship’s safety management system (SMS) to ensure a ship’s operation has adequate procedures for the operation, maintenance, and emergency response of a ship.
  • Flag State Inspections, which are annual or periodic inspections conducted by the country of registration to ensure a New Zealand-flagged ship meets international regulations and maintains valid certification.

Please note

The Maritime Operator Safety System (MOSS) is New Zealand’s version of the ISM Code for smaller domestic operations and covers most other domestic commercial operations.

Maritime NZ also undertakes Port State Control (PSC) inspections, which are PSC safety inspections of foreign ships arriving in New Zealand (foreign flagged).
